Intelligent and practical action!

Focus: HOPE is a nationally recognized civil and human rights organization in Detroit, Michigan. Our mission is to use intelligent and practical action to fight racism, poverty and injustice.

Dr. Ashish Dasgupta, project engineer at Focus: HOPE, explains the groundbreaking research project to Major General Nikolas Justice (center), Dr. Grace Bochenek, director of TARDEC, and General Ann E. Dunwoody.

General Reviews R&D Project

General Ann E. Dunwoody, commanding general of U.S. Army Materiel Command, visited Focus: HOPE's Center for Advanced Technologies recently to learn about a research and development project that uses friction stir processing and laser metal deposition to repair expensive parts that have been damaged by corrosion and wear.  Engineering students, including Jeffrey Harris (below), are gaining invaluable experience working with cutting edge technology on the research project. Initial findings indicate the corrosion damaged assets can be restored to new or better-than-new condition.

Focus: HOPE WALK

View photos from the 2009 Focus: HOPE WALK here.  Mark your calendars for the 2010 WALK which will be held on 10-10-10.

Volunteer Demitrius Givens (center) from Blue Babies helped children shop for just the right jacket.  Pleased with their selections are Devon Hodo, 6; Lawran Freeman, 9, and their mother Vikki Strickland with Jessie, 3 months.

Hyundai Coat Donation

The final distribution of jackets to families living in the neighborhood surrounding Focus: HOPE's campus took place on January 30. The warm jackets were made available as the result of a donation of 1,000 jackets from Hyundai Motor America.  "We appreciate it so much," said Cynthia Sims-Braxton (below). "The weather is freezing and the eonomy is so bad. I am very grateful." Coats were distributed earlier at a homeless shelter and to low income students at Focus: HOPE who are working to create brighter futures for themselves and their families.

Pretty in pink:  Five-year-old Vontiniece selected the pink hooded jacket to the delight of her mother, Cynthia Sims-Braxton.

Lookin' good -- youngsters with toasty warm jackets!
