Growing Together: Early Learning Updates from Our CEO
It has been just over two months since Focus: HOPE received confirmation that our application for federal Head Start funding for the 2025–2026 school year was not approved.
Focus: HOPE has proudly provided Head Start services since 2014, building on a legacy of early childhood education that began at our Center for Children in 1989. The loss of this program deeply affected our staff, families, and the children who have relied on us for early learning, nutrition, and family support.
While this development represented a significant setback, we want to emphasize that our early learning program is not closed. It is currently being reshaped and restructured to better meet the evolving needs of families and to continue delivering high-quality education and support to our youngest learners.
We are pleased to share that Focus: HOPE has received funding to expand our Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP), which will create 30 additional classroom spots for preschool-aged children. These new GSRP classrooms will officially open on October 27, 2025, at our Center for Children. This expansion is an important step toward rebuilding early learning opportunities for families in our community.
We know that the loss of Head Start services has left a gap, but we remain steadfast in our mission to serve children and families with care, quality, and commitment. Focus: HOPE continues to explore new funding opportunities, partnerships, and program models to ensure that early education remains accessible to the families who need it most.
As we move forward, we ask for your continued support and advocacy to restore and expand early learning services in our neighborhoods. The children and families of Detroit deserve the stability and opportunity that quality early education provides.
Thank you for your partnership, understanding, and belief in our mission.

Portia Roberson , CEO
